In this article we are going to go over the installation of a storm door. This is one of the easiest ways to let extra light into a living room and brighten your home. This allows you to keep your front or back door open while keeping the bugs and birds out.

Two major aspects to keep in mind when picking out your storm door is how wide the opening is and from what side you want it to open. How wide your door will be will depend on the width of your entry door opening. You will want to take this measurement before you go to the store. You will also want to make sure the one you pick out either opens the right way or is reversible.

When I install a storm door, I prefer it's handle to line up with the handle of the house entry door. This means if the entry door handle is on the left, the storm door handle will need to be on the left. This allows you maximum room to unlock and open your entry door when you have an armful of groceries.

Plan for this project to take an hour or two if you are a novice. You will need a cordless drill, a pair of pliers and screwdrivers. You will put the storm door in place by driving screws through the door frame into the door frame your house. Remember that it is more important that the storm door fit it's frame properly than for the storm door frame to fit the house door frame perfectly. The gap between the door and it's frame should be consistent around the entire frame to provide a good seal and look right.

Once you attach the door frame to the house and you are happy with the way it swings, you will need to install the door closer and door handle. Be sure and read the instructions as paying a little extra attention to them can save you lots of time by making sure you do things in the right order. Also, if you get into a situation where you have questions, don't hesitate to call the store where you bought your door. A lot of the employees at home improvement stores get some of the same questions over and over and may know exactly what the problem is.

I hope this has given you the information you need to install your own storm door. An attractive, properly hung storm door can add light to your living room and beauty to your home.
